All about thyroid gland and thyroid test

It is no secret that the thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped endocrine gland. It is nestled in the lower front of the neck in every human being. Its main function is to produce thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood. Through blood this hormones is carried to every tissue present in the body of a human being.

This gland produces thyroid hormone, which eventually assists the body to use vital energy, stay warm, active and keep the brain, heart, muscles, as well as other organs work normally and with their optimal functioning capacity.  

Many people do not understand the function of thyroid gland

However, it must be noted that many people do not understand the function of thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is thyroxine, also known as T4. T4 contains four iodine atoms and it functions in the liver and in certain tissues such as T3 functions in the brain. Do you know Thyroid gland secretes tri and tetra –iodo thyronine also called as T3 and T4?

Here, it must be noted that the amount of T4 produced is monitored and controlled by another hormone, which is produced in the pituitary gland. Pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain, which is also known as thyroid stimulating hormone (also known as TSH). Do you know T4 stimulates RNA synthesis and thereby protein synthesis?

In common terms, the thyroid and pituitary acts like a heater and a thermostat. However, the problem arises if they start working abnormally and unable to regulate the body’s temperature.

When a person shows certain signs and  symptoms such as intolerance to heat, increased sweating, frequent diarrhea, muscle weakness, sadness, nervousness, psychic disorders, fatigue or even tremor of the hand, then doctors suggest for thyroid tests.

Person is having Hyperthyroidism

All the above given symptoms show that the person is having Hyperthyroidism, which is grave and can’t be neglected.  Doctors diagnose it through a wide range of means like free thyroxine, BMR,  rate of uptake of iodine, PBI ( protein binding iodine), TPO Ab, Tg AB, TSH-R[stim] Ab, TSH-R[block] Ab, etc. it can be treated with medicines or through surgical removal of the gland. So, if your body shows the above mentioned signs, then you should immediately rush to your doctor.
