Is there any profession in today's world that doesn't demand talent or certain qualities from its practitioners? Well, there isn't! To become an expert in a particular stream, you need to possess some extraordinary characteristics so that the stream itself could accept you and bring out the best in you.

Talking of professions, Software Testing industry is growing rapidly nowadays. Numerous companies from around the world are investing their technical knowledge and expertise to provide specialized software testing solutions.

When the word 'qualities' come up, we are talking about the must-haves, the top-notch abilities that make testers what they desire of becoming and help them fly high and far. Motivation, dedication, hard work, punctuality, etc. are the basic requirements of any job, but what we are going to discuss are somewhat inevitable without which, sooner or later, the testers might get disengaged from their craft.

Now, without further ado, let's talk about a few must-have qualities of testers.

1.    Curiosity
Without any doubt, curiosity has to be the topmost quality in software testers. Each day you have to question anything and everything which is uncertain. Your mind has to work like “What might happen if ‘Submit’ button is clicked thrice? Or twice? Or what can possibly happen if ‘Esc’ button is clicked after hitting ‘Submit’ button twice?

If you are a professional tester, you would surely have developed this thought process and in case, you haven’t, it is recommended that it is high time to possess it. Because if you will not, your customers will. They will ask you various types of questions instead of you, asking yourself.

2.    Sharp Eye for Details
It is one of the most important qualities but nobody can develop it artificially. Having an eye for even the tiniest detail helps in noticing mistakes in a particular software program quickly.

Are you satisfied with the test result? Do it again and make it a habit. Trying it, again and again, can bring out the minutest mistake which could have made the software of no use.

3.    Thinking with Logic
If you are wondering software testing is merely transforming phrases from the given requirements document to test programs, you are mistaken by a big margin.

Each and every term like brainstorming features, deciding test strategy, requirements discussion, debugging an issue, building tests and replicating production issues can only benefit from thinking logically. From reasoning your steps to thinking through the possibilities; to validating or invalidating; to planning next steps, a good tester has to put in his best-possible logic in everything he does.

4.    Discipline
Being a software tester, you should have a good amount of discipline in your nature. The profession asks for it. At your job, you are given an important responsibility of focusing on current and future uncertainties. Discipline helps you in catching those all possible human errors and think logically about every defect, situation, scenario, risk, etc.

While you work, you have to create your own structures and processes to give error less output in less time. Always remember as a tester, you can’t act casual and lenient with the quality of the software; there is no one after you to protect the fort!

In Conclusion
So, these are a few qualities that make you an efficacious tester. Whether you already are a software tester or a graduate considering to work with an established software testing company, these abilities will surely help you improve and figure out whether this profession is apt for you or not.
