Schneider Electric Targets 100% Renewable Electricity by 2030

Posted by Schneider Electric on December 12th, 2017

The energy management and automation solutions multinational joined the RE100 and EP100 initiatives led by The Climate Group. The list of corporations that work with the international nonprofit includes Facebook, ABInBev, Google, Microsoft, Nike, and General Motors. Schneider Electric’s new renewable energy and energy productivity targets are part of a larger goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The latest commitments apply more than 1,000 electricity-consuming sites around the world, including 200 factories, according to the company. In addition, Schneider Electric plans to use a range of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass.

Using its own technical solutions, Schneider Electric reduced energy consumption by 10% every three years for the past decade, the company says. At its headquarters in France, known as “The Hive,” the company reduced consumption by 6% between 2008 and 2017.

The company says that it can achieve its 100% renewables goal with:

Onsite projects at Schneider Electric facilities around the world
Offsite long-term procurement through Power Purchase Agreements
Energy Attribute Certificates and green tariffs
“Doubling energy productivity will help it to use energy as economically as possible while making the transition to renewables, which are themselves cost-competitive in many markets,” Helen Clarkson, CEO at The Climate Group, said publicly about the announcement.

This year the company has stepped up its environmental and energy efforts. Earlier this year they became a founding member of the Climate Leadership Council in the United States. In January, they acquired Renewable Choice Energy, which helps businesses transition to renewable energy.

Over the summer, Schneider Electric signed a partnership with the research organization Global Footprint Network to promote sustainable solutions. And Schneider Electric won a 2017 Environmental Leader Award for a project with Shedd Aquarium in Chicago that helped save 406,708 kilowatt-hours during the first 18 months.
