Fixing Bigger Imperfections Before Painting in Central London

Painting may seem like a straightforward task; you dip the paintbrush or roller brush into the bucket of paint then apply the colour onto the surface. However, the absence of proper prep work will result in paint that will fade, crack, or chip easily. Likewise, failure to prepare the surface for painting may result in the job looking less attractive than how you envisioned it, especially if there are imperfections such as cracks, dents, and holes. This is why professional painters in Central London take time to do prep work before starting any project. Here are some of the things you they d-, which you can copy if you are planning a DIY project:

  • Fill in nail holes – Prime the holes using high-quality paint primer, then let it dry before applying the actual paint. The process is known as ‘spot priming’ and the result should prevent anyone from spotting the nail holes after the paint has been applied.
  • Patch holes – Use an aluminium mesh patching kit. Painters in Central London push metal mesh patch over a hole before applying mud around three inches beyond its edges. Excess mud is removed to ensure a smooth area. Sand it lightly when it dries, apply another coat of the mud, and lightly sand it again when it dries. You should not be able to feel the metal patch when you touch the area. Otherwise, you will need to apply another coat.
  • Repair cracks on the wall – You will need a stiff putty knife for scraping around the crack. Make sure small pieces of plaster and any peeling paint are removed. Then, using the sharp point, cut into the crack. Apply paint-friendly caulk into the crack, preferably using a caulk gun, and use your finger to smooth it out and remove the excess. Let it dry.

Next, get piece of fiberglass mesh tape (make sure that it is a bit longer than the crack). Place it over the caulked crack. With a six-inch flexible drywall blade (putty knife or joint knife), apply the joint compound on the tape, making sure to go beyond a few inches from it. Smooth it out by applying pressure and remove the excess. Let it dry, then sand it before applying a second coat of the joint compound, which you will and after it dries.

Of course, you do not have to worry about prepping on your own if you hire reputable painters in Central London. Leave that to them, including the clean-up. This way, you can be sure of a job well done that can last for years.
