Smart, connected UPS from Schneider Electric
Posted by Schneider Electric on December 14th, 2017
As more and more organisations become de-centralised, as well as the expected rise in edge computing, there will be an increasing need for infrastructure that is not only intelligent and more easily managed, but also suited to the needs of smaller installations, branch offices and business units.
To address this need, Schneider Electric has developed the Smart-UPS with APC SmartConnect, which it describes as the first and only cloud-enabled uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for distributed IT environments. The solution, it says, enables businesses, particularly small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) that have limited IT staff and resources, to actively and effectively manage the health of UPS systems.
UPS battery failure on any piece of equipment is undesirable, but on the most business-critical technology it could mean catastrophic business delays and profit loss, the maker asserts, adding that today’s IoT-enabled world means these devices are likely supporting onsite and remote edge environments that must function at the same level of availability and security as the largest and most mission critical data centres.
The SmartConnect devices leverage Schneider Electric cloud-enabled EcoStruxure IT architecture to gather and send data about the health and status of a customer’s UPS devices including battery replacement, warranty renewal and UPS performance notifications. They can provide a secure, cloud-based web portal where users can view the status of their UPS, accessible from any internet-connected device.
The connected capabilities of the range can send customisable automatic notifications, firmware notification updates and advanced troubleshooting support through an easy-to-use remote monitoring interface. They deploy “right out of the box – no configuration required,” says Schneider, making it easy for non-technical users to install.
Another key point is that SmartConnect cloud-powered technology enables managed service providers (MSPs) to deliver remote UPS monitoring for SMB clients.
