Why engineering students must undergo in plant training

During the four year period of engineering degree, a student will learn multiple aspects in different dimensions. In order to gain complete knowledge in a particular field, a student must learn the subject in depth.

Learning pattern in engineering colleges can be broadly classified into two major parts, one is theoretical education and practical education. A student must learn both ways in order to be a complete engineer. The theoretical education is mainly classroom sessions and subsequent written exams. While practical education involves multiple aspects.

In order to gain practical knowledge about a subject, an engineering student must attend practical lab sessions, attend industrial visits and undergo in plant training. A student must cover all these aspects in order to attain complete practical knowledge.

Among these, one of the most important aspects is the in plant training. As the name suggests, in plant training (popularly known as IPT among the student community) means training in an industry in order to gain practical knowledge about the work culture.

In general, students will undergo in plant training in the final year of the engineering course. However, some students may undergo training in the third year itself. Usually, students go for in plant training for the period of 4-8 weeks. But there is no specific time limit for it, so some students may undergo training for a longer duration up to 6 months.

Students may go to in plant training in any industry relevant to their engineering degree. It is better for students to undergo training in an industry which is related to the field in which they want to get a job.

For example, if a student studying in Automobile engineering college in Chennai may look for opportunities for getting in plant training in any of the automobile manufacturing plants in Chennai. It will be helpful for the student to get a job in the manufacturing sector.

According to guidelines, it is not compulsory for students to undergo in plant training. But it is strongly recommended by the experts. Many top engineering colleges in Chennai made it as compulsory for its students to undergo in plant training during the final year. They even assist students in acquiring permission in top industries for this training.

Since it is not compulsory, some students fail to undergo training in their course duration. They are making a huge mistake as they are missing a huge opportunity to gain practical knowledge. So, in order to be a complete engineer, it is important for every student to undergo in plant training during the course duration.
