5 Must-Do Things When in Scotland

The United Kingdom’s northernmost country boasts of a geography that is varied and wide-ranging. Tourists can enjoy the laid-back rural lands in one area, appreciate the history of castles that are centuries old, and go visit one museum after the other.

There are countless things to do in this country of nature and history, but here are the top five things to do when in Scotland:

1.) Stay overnight in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is one of the country’s largest cities in terms of population. This city is distinctly known for its granite buildings and statues, in fact it is oftentimes called “Granite City” or “Grey City” by both locals and tourists. Notable sites include Town House and the historical Marischal College, which is one of the oldest universities in the area.

2.) Visit Loch Ness

If you are a fan of conspiracy theories, you will probably have heard of the Loch Ness monster, or Nessie. Although the existence of the long-necked Nessie has been a famous topic for debate, whether or not you should visit the freshwater loch is not up for discussion. It is something that everyone should visit. The deepest part of Loch Ness is almost 135 metres deep, however, due to the accumulation of peat, most parts of it are shallow.

3.) Explore and shop in Edinburgh

The Scottish capital, Edinburgh, is a city that should not be missed. This city has so much to offer, ranging from sightseeing and hiking up Calton Hill, visiting the formidable and historical fortress that is Edinburgh Castle, and shopping in the busy Princes Street. Staying for a night or two in hotels or Edinburgh apartments might be necessary because of the unlimited possibility of things to do here.

4.) Appreciate the architecture of Fort William buildings

Just three hours from Edinburgh is Fort William, another must-see city in Scotland. Make sure to leave your apartment early because it will be a long ride. Fort William is the leading tourist destination in Scotland. It is known for its old architecture and museums, as well as its unspoiled environment. Historical Saint Andrew’s Church is a landmark here. Tourists also frequently stop by Neptune’s Staircase, which beautifully overlooks the Caledonian Canal.

5.) Chill in the Isle of Arran

The majority of Scotland is made up of grasslands, and strolling down the streets is such an experience in itself. The Isle of Arran is an island that stands as testament to the everlasting beauty of Scotland’s environments. The island has a very nice oceanic climate, and the temperatures can drop as low as 6°C in January. Points of interest include the Machrie Moor Standing Stone Circles and Lochranza Castle.

This list is not definitive. There are so many things to do in Scotland. Although there is a widespread belief that touring this part of Europe may become pricey, it is important to note that cheaper accommodation like Edinburgh apartments, and walking instead of taking taxis, can drastically cut your holiday expenses.
