HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR LIGHT TRUCK TIRES?

Posted by Trucktiresinc on January 12th, 2018

Tires are definitely the most important part of any vehicle, without which movement is physically impossible – no matter how spick and span the engine is. Today, there are extremely well engineered tires available in the market that demand little to no maintenance. However, some amount of care and looking-after is still needed for the tires, just like everything else in a vehicle. If you are wondering about how to take care of your light truck tires, this article is for you. Read on to find out.

What parameters do you need to check for tire care?

Normally, drivers get the air pressure in the tires checked at regular intervals and believe the maintenance has been done. However, there is more than just air pressure that you need to check to properly care for your tire:

  • Air pressure
  • Rotation
  • Vibration
  • Alignment
  • Balancing
  • Treadwear indicators
  • Driving habits
  • Service life of tire

How do you proceed now?

Here is what you need to do with each parameter.

  • Air pressure – always check air pressure at least once a month, or before going on long hauls, and in extreme cold and hot weathers. Always inflate the tires to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and not the value on the sidewall of the tire.
  • Rotation – tire rotations in a vehicle ensure that no tire gets worn out greater than the others. It ensures that all the tires get equal amount of wear and tear, saving you money for a new tire in case one fails. Make sure you switch tire positions often.
  • Vibration – Excessive vibrations in the axles and steering can make the tires wear out sooner than their life. If you feel vibrations while driving, get the vehicle checked immediately to save your tires.
  • Alignment – tire performance is dependent on proper alignment of the vehicle with the suspension parts. If there is a misalignment, tires will sustain excessive wear. Get alignment checked frequently.
  • Balancing – wheel balancing should be done before mounting new tires on a vehicle. Imbalanced wheels cause excessive stress on the front tires, causing them to fail prematurely. All wheels should be balanced in their weight and tire weight necessarily.
  • Treadwear indicators – each tire has markers at a depth of 2/32” which indicate that it is time for replacement. Keep an eye out for these indicators – when your tread has worn out enough, these indicators will begin to show.
  • Driving habits – tendencies like speeding, driving on pavement edges, speeding while navigating a turn, etc. cause damage to tires and wear them out prematurely. These habits are to be avoided.
  • Service life of a tire – Have all the tires in your vehicle, including the spare, examined by a specialist every once in a while, to determine how much use is still left in them. Depending on usage, serviceable life of tires is highly variable, therefore expert investigation is necessary.

Care for your tires, and the tires will care for you.
