Four Great Tips for Picking Tiles for Bathroom Remodeling

Here are four helpful tips for choosing tiles for your new bathroom.

1. Choose your favorite tile first.

Normally, when we plan for a new bathroom project by bathroom builders in Melbourne, we have that one tile that we have seen before that sticks out in our mind because of how great we think it looks. This is perhaps because of a certain color that pops or a natural tone that looks relaxing to the eyes. You can use this tile as your main theme, and have other parts of the bathroom chosen with how good they look alongside it. And, of course, if you find a tile that is even better than the tile you are imagining, you can always swap it out in the planning phase.

2. Make a limit to three different tiles.

You will typically choose a floor tile, a wall tile (either for the shower area or the entire room, and an accent tile. Have your favorite tile as a starting point, and not only should you base the other parts of your bathroom around this tile, but other tiles you might consider as well. If your go-to tile has a really unique color and will be used as your bathroom’s focal point, you can have other tiles serve as accent tiles, whether you want it sporadically mixed in with your main tile, or want it lining your countertop. If color is just what you don’t want in a bathroom, we will understand the same. Some homeowners just love to keep it plain. If your go-to tile is rather plain, like a light grey tile, then consider adding an additional design element with a bold accent tile, or even a smaller white tile to make it something even mildly interesting to look at.

3. Consider the required maintenance.

Many homeowners just hate having to clean the house. One place in the bathroom that especially requires cleaning is the tub and shower area, so when choosing the tiles for these areas, porcelain or ceramic will likely be your choice of material, since both of them are maintenance free. Tiles made out of stone will require maintenance, and will also need to be sealed. Stone is a porous material, which makes it hold onto more grime and dirt compared to other types of tiles. Glass tile is another type of tile that is great for the wall or accent tile, but not for a floor tile, as it gets slippery when wet. Consult with bathroom builders in Melbourne for other tile options that may be available.

4. Don’t go crazy with color.

There are so many gorgeous tiles to pick from, and a bathroom has enough space to express your personality and take risks with a non-traditional color or pattern of tile. However, with too many unusual color choices, your bathroom can look dated. With that in mind, limit your tile scheme to just one outlandish color, and choose either monochrome or neutral colors for the rest of your color pallet. This way, you can have a bathroom that will look great now, as well as multiple decades from now. That one color can either be your dominant or accent color, so there are many different ways that it can be displayed.
