Garapa Wood Decking and Tips to Maintain It

Posted by ABS Wood on January 19th, 2018

The light color and durability of Garapa wood decking makes it a popular choice for those who want materials that can withstand the elements without losing their beauty. Also known as Brazilian oak, Garapa wood is a hardwood sought out for its distinct characteristics. This type of decking often has streaks of brown that add to its visual attractiveness which comes from its natural honey coloration. Sun exposure causes the yellow color to slowly turn a  light brown over time, simply adding to its appearance.

Garapa wood comes directly from the Amazon rainforest. Due to its origin, this wood is known for its incredible, natural water resistance. It also resists insects, decay, and rot naturally without the need for preservatives. The estimated lifespan even with element exposure is about 25 years, which makes it a discerning choice for outdoor projects. While preservatives are not required to enhance the lifespan, a UV-blocking finisher can be beneficial to preserve the natural golden honey color.

Once installed, Garapa wood decking requires only minimal maintenance to keep its appearance and durability. These tips can help consumers get the most out of their Garapa wood decking:

  • Consider stain with care – If the desire is to use a UV-blocking finish or other stains on the decking once it is in place, take care to select a high-quality product. If manufacturer instructions are available, follow them closely. If not, consider contacting the manufacturer or retailer for a recommendation on the type of finish to use.
  • Keep the surface debris free – Routine sweeping to keep dirt, leaves and other debris off the surface can help preserve the appearance of the wood while preventing any staining. A standard household broom or push broom will do the job.
  • Clean with care – Garapa wood decking does not require heavy cleaners to maintain. Water and a gentle soap are typically all that is needed. If stains are a concern, a stiff brush may be used.
  • Avoid pressure washing – As a hardwood, Garapa wood decking is known for its durability. Pressure washers, however, can have a sandblasting effect on the wood fibers. Avoid their use to prevent damage to the wood and to help maintain its structural integrity.
  • Annual Finishing – many people apply another coat of finish annually to insure the beautiful original color is maintained.   Be sure to clean prior to applying annual recoats.

Garapa wood decking is a beautiful choice for enhancing the beauty and functionality of backyards and other outdoor areas. This Brazilian hardwood is known for its natural water resistance and distinct visual appearance. Once installed, Garapa wood is intended to last for decades with only minimal routine care and maintenance.
