But as modern living rooms are becoming smaller, designing it seems to be a challenge. The traditional decor plans work no longer, and modern interior designers suggest to opt for a minimalistic interior. The furniture trends are changing, and instead of massive sofas, armchairs, and rectangular coffee tables, people are switching towards small multi-functional furniture units. The 2 seater sofas are also becoming a popular alternative to regular sofas, and the tables and display units are getting replaced by wall-mounted shelves. The most crucial challenge that comes with a small living room is how to strike a balance between making the room spacious while also squeezing in enough seating space. Read on further to get more ideas about it:

1. Use mirrors and wallpaper
A small living room, especially one without any window can look cramped. So, create a focal point in the room by having a features wall behind the sofa. You can either hang a framed art on a light-hued wall or use decorative wallpapers. However, if the room has a window, then it’s better to decorate the wall by hanging some mirrored accessories that would reflect more light around the room.

Tips: Centre the 2 seater sofa on the designer wall, flanked by a matching side table. If the space, allows have a coffee table with storage and use the side table for having a lamp and some ornaments on display.

2. Go for storage furniture units
As a living room is quite prone to clutter, it’s better to place the seasonal stuff in storage furniture units. If you have not purchased the sofa yet or looking to replace it, then buy one with storage space beneath the mattress. Apart from this, you can have an ottoman style coffee table or one with shelves and drawers. And, try a small chest of drawers or a console table to boost storage options.

3. Place small-scale furniture units
As the full-sized furniture units can mess up a small living room, so look for their smaller counterpart such as 2 seater sofas, wingback chairs, and side tables. Modern 2 seater sofas are quite comfortable and stylish enough to appear as the centre of attraction in the room. For more seating space you can pair it with a few armchairs.

4. Look up
If your small living room is blessed with high ceilings, take full advantage of that extra space. While vertical space doesn’t help in providing an extra seating, drawing the eyes upward gives the impression that your room is far larger. So, fill the vertical space with an eclectic art gallery.

5. Make use of corners
It’s a bit counterintuitive, but if you have a small living room, using the corner spaces can make it feel bigger. If the space allows, you may either go for a small corner sofa. However for if the nooks are too tight, then use it by having a corner shelf or desk that will be ideal for placing some coffee table books and knick-knacks in the room.
