Replacing The Level Indicator Of Your RV Water Tank

Posted by Linda Wilson on January 25th, 2018

Not many RV owners know that their vehicles come equipped with various kinds of sensors. And the ones who do are unaware that these sensors use similar technology to monitor the water levels present inside the motor home tank. Even if your RV has tank monitors, you still need to replace them after a period of time. And it becomes all the more imperative when you’re actively pondering the question, “How can I sell my RV?” That’s because a rig, even a used one, costs a lot of money, and potential buyers make it a point to inspect every inch of the vehicle to make sure they are getting their money’s worth. So, you need to replace the RV water tank level indicator before a potential customer stumbles across the same.

Remember, in the saturated RV market, first impressions matter significantly, and if the customer thinks you’re trying to fleece him/her, not only will you lose the sale but you might have trouble finding another buyer.

Replacing the water tank level indicator of your RV is a fairly easy process, and you will not require any professional assistance to finish the job. Simply follow the steps given below:

Get the Old Tank Ready

The first thing you need to do is empty out the waste tank in your RV. Once it is completely cleaned out, park your motor home on a flat, level surface. Remember to apply the emergency handbrake of your RV. Switch off the electricity and water supply to your vehicle’s waste tank. Now, you need to open it up and look inside. Ideally, the bottom should be visible. If some water is still present in the tank, you must remove it manually. Next, take a plain, dry rag and clean the area of the tank thoroughly where you wish to place the new water tank level monitor.

Remove the Previous Sensor

Get under your motor home and find the sensor wires that are connected to the gray water holding tank. Now, use your fingers to trace the wires until you come across the sensor which is situated at the side of the tank. Remove the nut holding the monitor in place with the socket set. You must unplug the wires of the old sensor and also take out the retaining bolt with a little help from the socket set. Now, all that remains is removing the old sensor.

Setting Up the New Monitor

Carefully take the new water level sensor out of the package. Place the holding flange on the side of the RV tank and secure it so that it stays in position. Make sure you install the monitor inside the tank. You will find bolts inside the package that enable you to screw the sensor into place. Then, gently pull the monitor wire so that no part of it remains inside the tank. You will have to insert the wiring connection into an electrical socket that is nearby. Once the monitor switches on, check whether it is working properly or not.

If you follow all the instructions properly and use the proper tools, you can replace the tank monitor sensors within an hour. However, if you are unsure about your DIY skills, it might be wise to contact a professional RV service. After all, when you are asking yourself the question, what is the fastest way to sell my RV? a botched replacement job is definitely not the answer. So, make sure the process is complete before you put your vehicle up for sale in the market. Give your buyer an RV that matches their expectations and you won’t be disappointed when it comes to closing the deal.
