The Benefits of a Platform Bed & Its Slat System

A Humble Tree

A platform bed begins its domestic life with a tree that sacrifices its life and is hopefully replaced with a seed or a sapling. With eco-friendly furniture companies, the wood from the tree in question is a natural hardwood that may also sport some non-toxic stain or sealant that biodegrades quickly. Some of the more common hardwoods that endure for longer periods of time are cherry, mahogany, oak, and bamboo, the last of which is a highly renewable resource. The conventional spring mattress and its consort-box-spring are not made of 100% renewable resources. Sadly, they’re primarily made of a wide variety of unnatural and often toxic materials that defy Nature by taking a long time to biodegrade, even after they’ve been burned. Synthetic materials have a very short history when compared to the ancient history of trees. One would be hard-pressed to find a drawing or a graphic description of Plato bouncing on a spring mattress and a box-spring, or even Queen Victoria for that matter, and she hasn’t been dead that long.

A Clever Slat

A marketing phrase referred to as the "total sleep system" describes how air is encouraged to circulate throughout one’s sleeping environment as the result of an ingenious invention referred to as slats, actually, natural wooden slats, to be exact. A simple name for a simple device. Because of a design that provides ample space between each slat, air can move freely, even with a mattress placed on top of these sturdy slats, which are connected with strips of dense cotton cloth. Some eco-friendly mattresses even have a "flow-through" material on the bottom where they come into contact with the slats, creating a conduit or chamber of sorts that facilitates the constant flow of air. This “sleep system” allows for a perpetual exchange of dirty air and clean air, which discourages the never-ending threat of invasion by relentless dust-mites and insidious molds.

A Living Mattress

The final touch of this “total sleep system” requires the right mattress, and the ideal choice in this case, which many believers claim is the best choice for consistency, is a mattress made of natural latex, which melds orthopedic support with tissue penetrating comfort. Although latex mattresses haven’t been around as long as futons, latex itself has been flowing freely from the Hevea brasiliensis or Pará rubber tree for millennia, and it’s shows no signs of stopping the alternative commercial flow of eco-friendly mattresses.
