Celebrating Thrissur Pooram Most Colourful Festivals in Kerala

Among the most colourful temple festivals in India is celebrated in Thrissur, Kerala, in the Malyalam month of Medom (generally around April-May). The Thrissur Pooram is a spectacle like none other. Thrissur Pooram

Vadakkumnatha Temple, committed to Lord Shiva, is among the oldest temples in Kerala and lies on a hillock right in the middle of Thrissur. Throughout Thrissur Pooram, temples in and around Thrissur are invited to bring their deities to the temple. The whole procession and celebrations last for 36 hours, without a break. The gods and goddesses get here at the temple on wonderfully caparisoned elephants. The men riding the elephants hold huge colourful parasols or umbrellas, which are specifically prepared for the celebration. The elephants take on and on the beats of the temple orchestra and the parasols are exchanged among the males riding the elephants. The processions and drums go on throughout the day and the festival comes to a close with an amazing screen of fireworks. Though the temple is a Hindu one, Pooram is celebrated by individuals of all religions and is a truly nonreligious festival.

Arriving

The closest airport to Thrissur is the Kochi airport, about 85 kilometres away. From the airport you can schedule a pre-paid taxi to bring you to Thrissur.
