History of the Kilt Jacket

Posted by Kevin Johnson on February 16th, 2018

Contrary to other types of national dress and traditional attire, kilts have been changing with the times. Some factors have contributed to this evolution. First, highland people are obstinate and somehow very romantic thus they are passionate about hanging to old-time fashions and decoration.

Also, you will find that their outfits have long been mingled with military wear. Quite clearly, this is as a result of the conceited Scottish culture of warriors and lengthy history of military service to British Empire in Scotland. You should note that the intelligence of highland community lies in taking the best of whatever could be stylish at the time and combining it with the tartan kilt, which is the immortal garment of their skin. The outer body garments may entail vest and jackets which have constantly been the most variable. The elaboration given below explains will help you comprehend the above facts better.

17th Century

This is where the highland wears begun. The word doublet is a prehistoric term that dates back to the 16th century. Doublets were a common wears throughout Europe particularly in the 17th century. The doublets of King James time brought certain rudiments such as the ‘tashes’ also known as tassets and shoulder adornments that would develop into shells or wing on military doublets. You could note that in the non-highland clothes, the doublet would reduce as time goes by and become waist coat. The overcoats that were worn over doublets would then gradually morph into suit coats. Throughout the 17th and 18th century, lace cuffs and neckwear were trendy and they were preserves for official outfit in the 19th century.

18th Century

Doublets were also prevalent in the 18th century and some had epaulettes which was a military convention foe putting on the baldric. There were also common jackets in this century made in a Scottish Style and this highland clothing style was known as highland jacket. It was more civilian gentle appearance of the era particularly when made from tartan. Undoubtedly, military doublet was increasingly realistic wear when blended with the copious fabric of a great kilt or even any type of kilt. Shorter jackets have been of more preference while the longer fashions have not. The military coatee of this century later became the motivation for a coat that was worn by the civilian Prince Charlie.

19th Century Victorians discover highland dress

As with several other features of Scottish dress, the 19th century saw the largest degree of progress in jacket which was as a result of Victorian passion. Highland dress was of more civilized fashions and was rounded out a structure for the Victorian men. Several original renditions of coated garments were developed for diverse occasions such as day clothing, official evening dress, hinting and sporting wear. Broad range f elements from previous centuries and military clothing were integrated. And yet, the main aim was to adjust contemporary garment styles to function well with the timeless kilt. Several of these designs have ever since become conservative.
