 Acid reflux is a common digestion issue that causes burning pain in the lower area of the chest. It generally happens due to the up flow of stomach food or acid back up into the esophagus. Generally, the food from the esophagus enters into the stomach through the lower esophagus sphincter (LES). LES is a muscular ring that opens up when the food needs to enter the stomach. When this ring does not close properly or becomes loose, the stomach acids flow up, thus causing acid reflux.

According to the American College of Gastroenterology, about 60 million American experience the acid reflux symptoms. Moreover, at least 15 million experience the symptoms daily. In the western countries approximately 20 to 30 percentage of the population experience heartburn.
