All About Waterproofing Compounds

Waterproofing is an act of making a structure waterproof or water-resistant so that water does not affect the structure. It has now become a necessity for newly constructed structures. Waterproofing compounds are the materials used in the process of waterproofing. They are majorly employed to protect the structure from penetration of water in its liquid state and under pressure.

In construction, a structure is waterproofed making use of membranes and coatings to protect its structural integrity. Modern waterproofing compounds are water-repellent coatings and sealings. Waterproofing compound is extensively used for all types of concrete to prevent water penetration. It is also used in the construction of concrete roofs.

The term waterproof is used for many products, though each of the product has a specific area of application.

Different types of waterproofing compounds are employed in various waterproofing methods. Let us have a look at some of the waterproofing methods:

  1. Liquid Membrane Method: In this method, a membrane is laid on the structure to act as a water resistant object. Liquid membrane method of waterproofing is used majorly for the flat roof area exposed to weathering. This method is a bit expensive. Polyurethane liquid membrane can offer higher flexibility.
  1. Bituminous Coating Method: In the Bituminous coating method, a coating is applied to the structure in question. This type of coating is used for waterproofing and flexible protective coat. Its flexibility and resistance against water are dependent on polymer grade and other factors.
  1. Liquid Membrane Method: In liquid membrane coating method, a thin waterproofing compound is applied on to the structure. The coating consists of a primer coat and top coats applied by roller, trowel or spray.

  1. Cementitious Waterproofing Method: It is the easiest method of waterproofing in construction, wherein a waterproofing compound is mixed with cement during application. They are called integral waterproofing compounds and make the plaster and concrete dense. Because of which voids do not form and water carrying capillaries are broken.

Waterproofing compounds are the materials used to protect building structures, walls, and installations from the harmful effects of water and corrosive fluids. By purpose, waterproofing compounds are classified into three categories: anti-seepage, anti-corrosion, and hermetic, i.e. complete and airtight. Also, waterproofing compounds can be of asphalt, mineral, plastic, or metallic material.

Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ is an integral waterproofing compound. It gives waterproofing to plaster and concrete. It also resists corrosion in steel bars. It thus helps to increase the workability of mortar that reduces rebounds loss.

Thus, waterproofing compounds are the basis for a reliable waterproofing of the structure. The selection of waterproofing compounds must be made wisely depending on the type of structure.
