Spa Filters: Types & Maintenance

Posted by Alison Henry on March 5th, 2018

In market you may easily find two different types of spa filters. They are used in modern portable spas and also the swim spas. Their main purpose is to filter out the particulate matter that may be present in the water. Now let’s look at the things in slight detail.

Pleated Spa Filters

They are the most common type of filters and they are used if the particulate matter is 20 microns or larger in size. They are made from pleated filter material known as media. Wondering what is the reason of being pleated? The main reason of the presence of pleats is that increases the surface area of the spa filter. It increases the efficiency and also reduces the overall size requirement. Sundance spa filters also available in pleated form.

Micron Spa Filters

You may find them being used alone or in conjunction with pleated filters. These filters use a different “spun” style of filter media. They are meant to remove the particulate matters that are good up-to 5 microns so they are ideal for water clarifications. One of the main advantages of micron filters is that they save money by reducing the amount of spa chemicals that may be required to maintain the clarity of the water. Like other things that are available in the market there are a few manufacturers who cut costs but compromising on the quality of the filter media that is used. There are non-factory spa filters that can be made from the media that crumbles and doesn’t clean well. It may also cause clogging and may become unusable quickly than the other high quality spa filters. Another important aspect of the spa filter construction to note is how the caps at the end are fixed to the filter media.

Life of a Filter

There are many things that affect the life-span of the filter. The amount of spa and the way a filter is maintained contribute to the life of the filter. As you use the filter the cartridge will get locked and it may need replacement as well. It is suggested that you clean the filters every two weeks. If you have been using micron filters they can’t be cleaned but you might have to replace them every 3-4 weeks.

In The End

Whether you are using Sundance spa filters, or something else just make sure that you are maintaining them well for better results.
