The History of Men?s Sweatshirts without Hoods (and with Hoods)

Posted by paraval on March 7th, 2018

Long before hoodless sweatshirts and hoodies became a de facto uniform for angry teens, they were fashion staples renowned for their work in the athletic industry. The hoodies we see joggers, skaters, skateboarders and almost all men don at some point did not just sprout and get to their modern-day design. It took years of development for that to happen.

As a fan of men’s streetwear, it is good to know just where the hoodies and sweatshirts without hoods we see today came from.

In the Twentieth Century

In the 1930s, athletes had a hard time competing because they were laid out by colds and other weather-related illnesses. One company decided to stand up for these champions and create a piece of topwear that would not only keep them warm but also enhance and support their performance. This company is known the world over in the men’s streetwear scene for its role in fashioning the sweatshirt. The name of the enterprise was Champion Products.

Champion Products’ first rendition of the sweatshirt was based on the premise that hoodies and hoodless sweatshirts should provide comfort for their wearers, in addition to retaining body heat during cold periods. Over time, other companies took over sweatshirt manufacturing but added twists of their own. This led to the evolution of sweatshirts.

Today, designers and old-school streetwear brands develop sweatshirts with a myriad of factors in mind. They look at how comfortable the pieces are, how durable they will be, the scope of practicality they offer and even how good they look. We have moved up from thinking about kangaroo pockets and ribbed sides to considering how to play with color palettes in sweatshirt design.

At Paraval, our sweatshirts without hoods go beyond looks and base their quality on their material and hand-sewn nature. Want a taste of high-quality men’s sweatshirts? Then wear Paraval.
