Teddy Quinlivan Says the Fashion Industry Is the "Perfect Place" to Commit Sexual Assault

Just six years after she was discovered by Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, Teddy Quinlivan is already considered one of the top models in the fashion industry. She's walked in almost every major fashion show from Louis Vuitton to Chloe, and starred in ad campaigns for brands like Michael Kors. Last September, she publicly came out as transgender in an interview with CNN Style. The Fashion Spot noted in their Spring 2018 diversity reportthat Teddy's addition to their season-long tally of transgender models singlehandedly boosted the total number of appearances from 18 to a record 45. In a panel at the Gurls Talk festival with Teen Vogue and Coach on Sunday, Teddy shared that she publicly revealed her transgender identity because she wants "other transgender women or men out there to see anything is possible." "Selling super expensive clothing to rich people is fun," she continued, "but getting to change the world and de-stigmatizing what it means to be transgender is what's really important." Now she's adding her voice to the ever-important conversation around sexual assault in the workplace.

During Sunday's hour-long panel, which also featured Teen Vogue Executive Editor Samhita Mukhopadhyay and DJ/Producer/Activist Zeke Thomas, Teddy revealed that she's been sexually assaulted multiple times while working as a fashion model. "I've been sexually assaulted at work, outside of work by people I work with, and on a date. There's this sexual assault that happens in the workplace in fashion and people write it off because it's a creative industry. 'Because we're creatives, and we're sexually free, your sexual assault doesn't matter. Because he touched you there, it's not that big of a deal. You signed up for it. You have to take your clothes off for the photo." Models are often dressed by members of the crew on set, which can blur the lines between accidental touching and sexual assault. "There are moments where someone has touched me and it hasn't been sexual," Teddy said. "They had to move a strap and accidentally brushed up against my nipple. It's no big deal. There are other times where there are people sticking fingers in my underwear and groping me."
