A wheelchair is an important mobility aid for the disabled as well as ageing people who find it difficult to walk around independently. There could be various reasons to choose a wheelchair. Similarly, there are multiple wheelchair options to meet the needs of people who will be using them. Therefore, the most important thing while purchasing a wheelchair is to make sure that it will fit the needs of its user. You should consult the occupational therapist or physician for suggestions.

Analyze your options on below factors:

Wheelchair seat

The seat should be wide enough to support the upper leg and hips region. Sling type base is common as it gets folded easily with the chair. This is a good choice if the person is using wheelchair on regular basis. If an individual is using wheelchair for longer durations, a firmer base is suggested. A removable cushion for wheelchair is recommended to ensure better positioning, pressure distribution and shock absorption.Air or gel cushions are considered good. One that is tailored to specific needs is considered good.

Seat height

As people are of different heights, they need lowered or raised seats accordingly. Adjustable seats make it easy for people to use their wheelchair for mobility.

Frame – folding or solid?

Wheelchairs come in two varieties – solid or foldable. The feature depends upon the frame of the wheelchair. Folding frames, as it seems, are easy to transport. As its folding mechanism makes it flexible, it can be carried away and stored anywhere as required. On the other hand, solid or rigid frames are stronger. They require little maintenance and hence reduce long-term costs. In addition, they ensure better wheel alignment, which is required by users. It is important to consider the needs while choosing for a frame.

Backrest

Like the seat of a wheelchair, its backrest should also be comfortable, especially if the individual is going to use it for longer durations. The Backrest is an important component that supports the spine and also head, if needed. Its height depends on the user’s height or their need. Proper back support is essential to prevent pain, maintain normal posture and allow required mobility. A higher back rest may be needed for those with weaker trunk.

Armrests

Like backrests, armrests are also essential to keep arms and shoulders comfortable while using the chair. It also helps in transferring from the chair and to maintain balance while standing from the wheelchair. Armrests may be padded, wrap around or trough like. They also help while moving the wheelchair.
