Colonial cities can be found all over Mexico particularly in the middle region of the and extending all the way down to the the southern part of coast peninsula of Yucatan. Colonial cities are packed with charm, cobble stone roadways, history, art and luxurious architecture. Spain's influence of Western architecture, religion, culture and social customs are evident everywhere. You'll discover that every city is unique in character, history, cuisine and cultural influence. Traditional total annual festivals are in large quantity which have been celebrated for centuries. I'm a major lover of colonial cities and have traveled through Mexico exploring these gems. Listed here are my top recommended recommendations listed in alphabetical order.
Tip: try to stay within walking distance to the "Centro Historico" in all these cities.
1) Campeche
Campeche is the capital city of the sate of Campeche located on the shore gulf of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. Typically the Baroque colonial city of Campeche is historically known for its fortress walls built by the Spaniards during the 17th hundred years. These city turismo queretaro walls were built to protect the town to due to regular attacks for practically one hundred sixty years from pirates, buccaneers and many more intruders. Behind these fortress walls you will find one of Mexico's most preserved coastal impérialiste cities littered with pastel-colored homes, narrow cobblestone roadways and great dinning options with plenty of species of fish. Campeche is one of the few colonial metropolitan areas on the beach which is why it's such a find. It's a charming relaxing colonial city near Edzn? Mayan ruins you can visit, great fishing opportunities or take the advised walk through the town and see all the "Baluartes" (fortresses) and all the amazing historical architecture.
Must see & do: Catedral de San Francisco, Edzn? Mayan Ruins, Museo de una Architecura Maya, Catedral de Nuestra Se? ora de la Purisma Concepcion.
2) Guanajuato
Guanajuato is the capital city of the state of Guanajuato and is a magnificent old silver mining city with narrow streets and tunnels running up and down all over the hilly city. You don't desire a car here you can walk everywhere if you stay in the centro historico. In every switch you will discover a square, museum, gallery, historical landmark or outdoor dinning opportunities just waiting for you. Make sure you hike up the slope to see the beautiful 30' monument built for "Pipila". His real name was Juan Jos? de los Reyes Martinez and he was a local war hero during the Mexican War of Freedom in Sept. 28, 1810. In October, Guanajuato hosting companies the world-famous "Festival de Cervantino", it's three days of dedicated to the arts and filled with live music, theater, art and street performances. I highly recommend you go during the Festival de Cervantino, it's absolutely spectacular.
