Avril Burg combines edgy rocker with classic styles for cool look: Fashion

I grew up in Pepper Pike and I loved to sing. My last two years of high school were spent away at boarding school in Massachusetts and then I went to UCLA, studied psychology and lived in Los Angeles. Then I moved to New York City. I wasn't entirely confident with my singing and my parents were pushy so I tried going to open mic nights. I met my husband who got me to more open mic nights in New York. After we moved to Cleveland, got married, had our first child he said it was time for me to pursue singing. He put an ad in Cleveland Scene looking to put a band together. I thought I would do it for six months. Things took off and here we are.

Run Avril Run has been around since 1999. We play all over the place and do benefits and weddings. The music is rock and pop, everything from Bon Jovi to Lady Gaga. We choose the songs you love and want to dance to. Club Rock is an afterschool music program for kids in Beachwood.

I'm classy with a toned-down rocker edge. I used to dress very conservatively. I wasn't someone who followed the trends or went for certain labels. I am more grounded and look for things that look good on me. Things turned around after I went shopping with my sister one day and she got me to push the envelope. I learned how to get out of my comfort zone. With the band thing, I felt I could get away from being conservative and over the years my wardrobes have blurred. My band really pushed me into fashion and I discovered how fun it is. I push the envelope a little but never want it to look like I'm trying too hard.
