High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) capacitors are used in HVDC power transmission systems and converters. HVDC series capacitors are being primarily used in Capacitor-Commutated Converter (CCC) in which the series capacitors partly counterbalances the commutating inductance of the capacitor commutated converter and prevents fault currents. The global HVDC capacitor market is expected to rise at a CAGR of 17% during forecast period 2016-2023. HVDC transmission offer several advantages over AC transmission such as low transmission loss, less overall investment cost, less conductor per unit distance etc.

The key factor driving the growth of global HVDC capacitor market is the improved voltage stability and low transmission losses of HVDC as compared to AC transmission. The transmission loss is less in HVDC power transmission system asit consists DC voltage of up to approximately 400,000 volts. Therefore, higher the DC voltage, lesser the transmission losses, hence large amount of electricity power can be transmitted. According to Americans for a Clean Energy Grid, HVDC transmission has typically 30-50% less transmission loss as compared to alternating current overhead lines. For instance, if  2500 MW power is transmitted over a transmission line of  800 km, the transmission loss in a conventional 400-kV AC line is 9.4%. Whereas, in HVDC transmission at 500 kV, the transmission loss is  only 6%, and at 800 kV the transmission loss is  just 2.6%. Also VSC-HVDC  systems improves the voltage stability of power systems. Moreover, according to Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), HVDC transmission link is used to improvise the voltage stability of weak AC power systems. Therefore, research is going on to develop a device which would provide locally controlled DC power on the DC transmission link transmission thereby forming a radial multi-terminal HVDC. Therefore, improved voltage stability and low transmission losses of HVDC as compared to AC transmission is driving the growth of global HVDC capacitors market.
