Prevent Cathodic Protected Oil and Gas pipeline from overvoltage interferences

Under water or buried Pipelines serve under high pressures. If the pipeline material is additionally loaded with steel, promptly reaches its limit. In extreme cases, excessive corrosion results in failure of pipeline due to leakage which may cause monstrous material and environmental degradation. Therefore, the monitoring of the pipeline is necessary during operation, especially any kind of corrosion must be immediately spotted throughout the complete pipeline.

Temporary corrosion protection can be provided by coating and painting the pipeline. But this method is not sufficient, as even small defects in the coating can cause electrochemical corrosion in the pipeline rapidly. Permanent cathodic protection is usually provided for buried pipelines like oil, gas and other inflammable materials to protect it from corrosion. This uses insulating flanges at terminal points on the pipeline system, such as at tank fields, governor stations, etc, in order to limit the degree of the enforced cathodic protection and save the loss of protective current from other buried metallic structures. It requires continuous monitoring of the pipeline.

Moreover, immediate pressure leakage is identified by continuously measuring the pressure. Quantity measurements can also be done by measuring the quantity at the start of the pipeline and at the end of the pipeline and if difference is identified, trigger an alarm. In short, there are various other components equipped for the continuous inspection of the pipeline. In order to protect these high availability measuring systems, JMV is offering a protective solution for use in conceivably hazardous atmospheres.

In the event of a lightning strike on to the ground or any above ground pipe work or connected structure causes electrical fault on the pipe and a flashover across the insulating components to the flange could take place. Since the pipeline is connected to the passive or active cathodic protection, surge protection measures are required to discharge all overvoltages. The aim is to prevent failure of the cathodic protection rectifier by offering coordinated solutions. Our efficient surge protection device is a fire-proof gas spike arrester with malleable connecting cable for equipotential bonding. It complies with to IEC 60079 standard.
