India Slowly Pedalling its Way to a Cycling Culture

As the ‘greenatic’ ideology becomes more of a norm in modern India, one lifestyle-changing aspect that is making its way back into the Indian culture is cycling. There is more to cycling than what meets the eye. While it is true that cycling has the power to transform your waistline and prove to be extremely effective with your weight-loss regimen, the fact is that this physical exercise is not the only reason for the popularity of the sport.

With India fast catching up on this trend to go eco-friendly and become pollution-free, the shift towards the use of bicycles can have a very effective, long-lasting and positive impact on the Indian society as such.

Cycling was initially considered to be a thing of past. Today, with the introduction of technologically advances bicycles, young India is looking at cycling with a totally new perspective. It is no longer considered to be slow but a healthy mode of transport. This shift in paradigm is the basis for the cycling future in India.

What makes cycling popular among the youth?

It has been noted that use of cycling as part of a fitness regime is becoming an extremely popular option for the young of India. With cycling, these young people can combine health and fitness into their busy lives without having to dedicate a fixed time off for exercising. While there are others who are looking for some sort of an adventure, who find cycling or mountain biking the ideal activity. In fact, the latter activity has become so popular that cycling as a sport has seen an exponential growth over the last few years. Various sporting events that are connected to cycling have become very popular in recent times and this further reinstates the fact that India is ready for a cycling future.

Well, cycling isn’t still a sport as big in India as it is in countries like Germany, Netherlands or other European nations, it is slowly pedalling up there!

Cycling is one activity that takes you close to nature. It brings you closer to yourself. With the Indian lifestyle demanding more and more stress-free living, there is a deeper inclination for self-improvement activities in the country such as yoga. Cycling is also considered to one such activity that can act as a stress-buster. Most cycling routes are planned alongside naturally scenic places that further adds value to the whole experience of cycling.

 

The road ahead

As Indian youth has started to accept bicycle as a more favourable mode of commuting within the city, there is a great future ahead for the cycling enthusiasts in the country. While it is true that India still does not have its dedicated bike lanes and considering to take a bike ride to the office may still not be feasible, the fact is that we are moving towards it and because the people as such have realized the ecological benefits they may derive with the increased use of cycles will further fuel the cycle’s journey in India ahead!
