Let's face it most people don't like the idea of injections, but there is a big difference between dislike and be scared. But there is good news, you don't have to suffer with the fear of needles anymore. Many of the people who come to me to get help to overcome a needle phobia or a fear of needles have a good reason to be scared, and many have good reasons to know why they want or need to overcome fear. In some cases, not being able to get an injection or a blood test may be a life-threatening problem.

Some people have been afraid for a while they may remember and for some it started after an unpleasant experience. I've seen people about 6 years old, all the way to people in their 70 's. The only thing they had in common was the fear of needles, and they wanted help to overcome the fear of needles.

The first important thing you need to know.

The first important thing you need to know is that the fear of needles is a learned behavior and it means that it is something that you can overcome. People are born with only 2 built in fear and are fear of sudden loud noises and fears of falling. All the other fears are behavior learned and so you can overcome fear. There are a lot of more phobias like Long Words Phobia (Hipopotomonstrosesquipedaliofobia) Your brain is a learning machine that works all the time trying to make sense in the world and protect you. Because conscious thinking takes time and in some situations another or two thoughts could make the difference between danger and security your brain is designed to learn and protect you. So if you have learned a fear instead of being a conscious process it is something that runs on a subconscious level or in other words instead of thinking about it, you just do it. And although in many situations it is very useful , there are some situations where one has to be able to cope with the learned answer.

How to overcome the fear of needles.

To overcome the fear of needles you have to do several simple things to overcome the fear and teach your brain a new answer. Usually, most people who are afraid of needles can overcome fear or phobia in just a few appointments and in some cases just a date. What we want to do is break the old learned answer and create a more useful new answer.

When someone has a fear of needles especially a strong fear it is not uncommon to find that all about how they think and perceive that it is built around and in the thought of being frightened. And unfortunately, they involuntarily intensify their own fears.

When people come to me to help overcome the fears of needles one of the first things I ask them is, how do you know when it's time to feel scared? Most people who are afraid of needles do not wait until they make the injection to start to feel scared. They will typically start to feel scared hours, days or weeks in advance. Now if you think about it, if you feel anxious before the injection is started then of course it's not actually the needle that causes it. It would be like the food that makes you feel sick before eating.

The first thing you should do

So the first thing is to start paying attention to how you think about it. Because we all have thoughts that go through our minds all day long, most people deliberately don't know how they think of things. Many people who read this will hear the words inside their heads as they read. We all think about things even inside our heads, but have you taken the time to notice how you think about something and if your inner dialogue sounds quiet, relaxed or anxious? When you are thinking of having an injection can you imagine that there is tranquility and relaxation, anxiety or even panic? Do you see yourself in your mind eyes imagining what things may look like or do you see what you would see through your own eyes in the experience?

No matter how you think about it is your thoughts. And because it is your thoughts, you can change how you think needles.
