How to submit your work in art contests?

If you have ever spoken to a person who has been part of the judging panel in the art contests you will know what goes on inside. You will be surprised how little things matter when you are competing with top talents. When you participate in the contests if you think you are the one who is facing serious challenge, then you could be wrong. Actually the judges or the members of the jury face even bigger challenge of having to review so many artworks and picking a few winners.

When every work submitted is of top-notch quality, it gets really tough for the judges to pick the winning submission. So besides the quality of the work and the concept used, they also start looking at other factors while making their decision. This also includes how you are processing your work and how you are submitting it to the contest organizers. This applies to paid as well as free art contests.

Here are few important points that you may want to take into account when you are making your submission. Lately people take a picture of the artwork and send the digital version to the organizers. Some people also scan the work instead of taking pictures. However if the artwork is an oversized painting it may not be possible for you to scan. In case you are taking a photo of your artwork for submission, make sure that you are using a professional quality camera. If you do not own one, get a professional photographer to do the job for you. In case you own a professional or semi-professional camera and if you are taking the picture make sure the lighting is right. Poor lighting will certainly have bad effects on the painting and you should not lose your chance to win just because of poor quality lighting.

Cropping of the images should be done professionally too. Make sure that all the edges are perfectly cropped and that you are not carelessly cropping the image. Remember, you need to pay attention to details when you are processing the images. This takes time and if you are handling all these things in the last minute you are not likely to have the required time. You could end up sending poorly processed image.

Never make any colour corrections to your image. It is important to take pictures in good lighting and if the lighting is poor, some people tend to make colour correction to the photos. Instead of doing that, you will need to do what it takes to get the lighting right. If your pictures are found to be altered or modified digitally then you could get yourself disqualified from the contest. Avoid such mistakes. If you are thinking of participating in multiple contests then you need to learn how to work on the digital version of your artwork. There are no shortcuts here unless you want to hire someone to do it for you.
