Vodafone Group is touted as one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world having mobile operations in over 26 countries, fixed broadband operations in around 19 markets, and has partnered with mobile networks in more than 48 countries.

Aiming at bolstering technological leadership in the Indian market, Vodafone India announced the deployment of largest long-haul fiber network spread across 88 cities. Furthermore, Vodafone has installed over 43000 km of the 200G long-haul network in a short span of 75 days. The rate of expansion of their latest long-haul fiber network has made it the world’s fastest and perhaps, the largest optical deployment project.

The project is said to enable the company to further step up their already enhanced latency performance and customer experience for both, mobile and business customers. Not only that, the project is also known to benefit the Telco in enhancing its network for the massive growth in the data consumption along with the adoption of new technologies (like 5G and VoLTE).

In a discussion with the Technology Director of Vodafone India, Mr. Vishant Vohra regarding the launch of India’s largest 200G long-haul network, he said, “Consumers and businesses are increasingly demanding flexible, secure and efficient ways to consume data. Moving towards 200G long-haul network is a significant step by Vodafone India to lead and provide seamless network and high bandwidth to our consumers.

He further added, “This 200G Ultra Long Haul Fiber Network allows enterprise customers on performance monetization and improving customer experience. We are proud that our team could install India’s largest 200G network in a record time, making it’s the fastest deployment across the globe.

The network comes with many differentiating capabilities for customers, including:

  • Fiber Doctor: Improves Fiber Repair MTTR by detecting faults with the help of an online fiber monitoring tool
  • OVPN: Horizontal and Vertical network resource slicing for customers
  • First in India: Vodafone India is the first telecom company to offer Optical Virtual Private Network as part of their services in India
  • Low Latency: Low Latency Paths ensured by Latency Based Routing
  • T-SDN Enabled Network: T-SDN Enabled Network for a centralized controller, resource, and service visualization

Currently, Vodafone India is proud to serve over 223 million subscribers (of which, 120 million users belong to rural areas) spread across the country’s 15 circles with 4G services. The company has also been working with numerous network gear makers to augment the user experience. Uniquely positioned to engineer the vision of a Digital India, Vodafone offers a comprehensive portfolio of technologies (2G, 3G, 4G) and committed to optimizing the mobile telephone reach (although, nearly omnipresent) to address national development priorities.

The company has merged with Idea Cellular to form India’s largest mobile company targeting over 400 million customers, both being the second and third largest telecommunication operator in India respectively. However, according to experts, maintaining quality consumer experience and network coverage could be quite challenging for the merger company once they start their operations to unlock cost synergies through mass rationalization of sites. To which, the company responded, “We are not rationalizing any network before the merger. Post-merger, too, our combined network will have more capacity and more coverage as we will have the most spectrum for any entity as well as the most number of sites.”
