Strategies for Helping Students Motivate Themselves

Whether we talk about primary students or the ones studying for a doctorate degree, every student wants some kind of motivation to study more effectively. In order to motivate students, both parents and educators should make good strategies. These strategies should be practiced in every institute so that students can learn in a good environment. Not only is this, but motivation encourage every student to think outside of the box and do something new. This helps them in achieving their objectives and making a good career in life. In this article, we will discuss some strategies that are helpful in self-motivating the students. These strategies are as follows:

-          Creating objectives

Creating an objective makes things clear in mind. Both, short and long-term objectives should be made for motivating students to learn. This gives the direction and plans to every student. When students know what the objective of the topic is, they participate more actively rather than learning the topic without any aim. In this way, students are motivated to strive for their objective and learn actively. Creating an aim is not enough if the teacher does not discuss it again at the end of the topic. Once the topic is completed, teachers should ask every student whether their objective of studying this topic is achieved or not.

-          Freedom of choice

For motivating the students, it is imperative to give them some freedom. They should have freedom of choice when selecting some things in their classrooms. For instance, teachers can give few topics to the students and allow them to pick the topic of their own choice for giving a presentation. In the same way, students should have the chance to select their favorite spot for the field trip among the given list of places by their teacher. In this way, students take more interest in classroom activities and learn in a better way. The basic purpose of any motivational strategy is to involve the students in activities in a better way. Students realize that are getting some importance when teachers ask for their opinion and give them some autonomy.

-          Encouragement

Encouragement is highly essential for every student. Even if the student has done a little effort and lacks in few skill, he should get some encouragement to perform better in next activity. The strategy of encouragement should be implemented in a smart way. For instance, if the student has done something wrong, do not say it right away. Teachers can say that I like your step and it will look better if you add these points. Teachers should avoid words like “but”, “wrong”, and so on. Encouraging words should be used to let the students develop some confidence in them.  Encouragement strategy should also be used by parents at home to keep the students motivated all the time. This encouragement strategy should be used even for non-educational activities.

-          Building strong relationships with students

Boring and strict teachers are never liked by students and thus they are not motivated to put on extra efforts in their subject. Teachers should try to develop and maintain strong relationships with the students. These relations are developed when teachers create a friendly environment in the classroom. This strategy of developing friendly relations with students remove all sort of hesitation form the students. It also enables them to discuss their problems with the teachers and motivates them to take an active part in the classroom. For this strategy, teachers are required to give more time to the students and understand their behavior. Since every student needs a different kind of treatment, this strategy takes some time but its results are fruitful.

-          Practical implementation

If students only gain the bookish knowledge, they will become bored and will stop taking interest in the topic. It is therefore imperative to take them to the real world examples. It is human nature that we want to know the benefit of every action before working on it. Thus, when students do an implementation of their topics studied in the class, they get to know the results in the real world. This motivates them to actively participate in the next topic and allows them to give suggestions and ideas.
In a nutshell, motivational strategies should be the primary focus for every teacher. Students do not take interest in learning if they do not find it creative and fruitful. Thus, it is essential that teachers show them the outcomes and benefits of learning each topic. When they see the outcomes, they become motivated to work hard.
