The PUBG vs Fortnite Drama Continues with Bluehole VP Speaking Out

Posted by smrtsmith on July 4th, 2018

We recently covered Fortnite's Battle Royale game mode, with Omer providing a great 20 minute in-depth check out Fortnite Materials take within the Battle Royale genre. However, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the present market leader from the genre, was quick to fireside some shots at Fortnite. Bluehole VP Chang Han Kim stated "After listening for the growing feedback from the community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we're concerned that Fortnite might be replicating the feeling for which PUBG is understood."
The irony in this statement has not been lost on people, numerous quickly pointed out that it may be said PUBG copied H1Z1's King from the Kill game mode. Which, consequently, copied the initial DayZ Arma mod. Kim then released a clarification, inside an interview with PC Gamer.
So first thing I'd like to clarify is that this really is not regarding the battle royale game mode itself. There were other BR gamemodes Fortnite Traps earlier this season that were released, like last man standing or GTA 5's battle royale game mode, and that we never raised a challenge, and I think it's good that there's more competition and everyone can create their unique battle royale game mode, and it isn't really about the idea itself, it is more about Epic Games, knowning that wasn't really clear [inside the press release]. - Chang Han Kim
The full interview covers many topics, plus it seems your initial statement from Bluehole became a tad bit rushed. Epic Games own the Unreal Engine, which many games run off of - Gears of War and PUBG are but two examples. Bluehole pays royalties to Epic Games to work with the Unreal Engine also to avoid lawsuits, sufficient reason for Fortnite released, we have a worry among PUBG devs that Epic Games could withhold engine improvements in favor of their very own game.
The Fortnite vs PUBG conflict goes on for a long time, plus it remains to become seen just what will come from it. So far, no official talks between two companies occured.
