Signs Your Car Transmission Needs Repair

Posted by tannertransmission on July 4th, 2018

Your transmission, like other parts of the car, requires maintenance and care. No matter how new or old the car may be, neglecting the transmission could lead to serious issues. How do you know whether or not your transmission needs to be serviced? There are a few signs that every driver should look for.

If your car struggles when shifting from gear to gear, it could be a problem with the transmission. Hesitation, gear slippage, jerking, grinding, and shimmying are all common signs of transmission issues. The longer you allow this problem to persist, the worse things could get.

Another sign of an issue with the transmission issue is unusual sounds. Whines, buzzing, or clicks shouldn’t happen. A noisy car, whether idling or not, is one of the first indicators that the transmission is in trouble. While the cause of the noise could be something else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

A sure sign of transmission trouble is cloudy or burnt transmission fluid. Healthy, normal transmission fluid is bright red. It has a very sweet smell that’s easily distinguished. If your transmission is running too hot, it could burn the fluid, causing it to turn dark and smell burnt.

While burnt transmission fluid is a sign of transmission trouble, pay attention to other burning smells as well. As you turn off your car, pay attention to any other burnt smells. Sometimes a faulty transmission causes the gears to overheat due to friction. No matter what’s causing the scent, it’s important to get it checked out.
