Latest Technologies in Stem Cell Research Can Offer Hope for Alzheimer's disease

Posted by Elite Internet Technologies on July 9th, 2018

Stem cell technology offers patients as well as relatives of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease hope for the future. Research will eventually find a cure for one of the most devastating diseases affecting humanity today.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain. So far, doctors and researchers have not yet determined the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease, which increasingly disrupts the brain's function, memory, judgment, and communication. In the United States alone, a person is diagnosed with different stages of Alzheimer's every 2 minutes, and by 2030, people diagnosed with the disease in the United States are expected to reach 8,000,000. The hope for a cure for Alzheimer's has been on for decades, but the latest findings in stem cell research offers researchers huge gains in the right direction.

New Advances in Stem Cell Research

Recent advances in the study of Alzheimer's disease functions in the brain of mice have determined that neural stem cells injected into the brain help to rebuild nerve connections and thereby improve cognitive function. Findings from the study were published in July 2009, in an issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Development of treatments for Alzheimer's disease involving human neural stem cell research and development is under way at the Stem Cell of America. In addition, human growth factors that stimulate stem cell production and proliferation in the body's bone marrow have also been examined for their ability to reverse impaired memory in mice.

Researchers have determined that GCSF has been shown to reduce the levels of a specific protein that literally closes the brain while at the same time increasing the production of nerve cell development and increased nerve function. Both BDNF and GCSF promise not only relieve symptoms of Alzheimer's, but to reverse the disease process by improving memory and promoting the development of healthy neural stem cells.
