A population boom could be a blessing in disguise for a nation’s fortunes. After all, your workforce increases, your GDP receives a massive boost and economic growth ensues. However, if that population boom continues for longer than it should, then it may start to cause a few problems.
These problems often make their worst impact on the existing infrastructure in the country. The transportation systems in particular face severe challenges as a result of an ever-increasing population. And these challenges become even more pronounced for developing economies like India.
The following are some of the major hurdles faced by a country’s transport system when the population growth spirals out of control:
Traffic and Congestion
Probably the biggest problem an ever-increasing population creates is slow moving traffic. When the population increases, so does the demand for transportation facilities. And while that is comparatively easy to manage for water and air transport, it becomes a severe headache for the road transport system.
An increased population means there are more vehicles out on the streets. Even though this factor is considered during infrastructure planning, the magnanimity of the growth could often be unaccounted for. What results is heavy congestion and long hours in the traffic.
In an age where people are already stressed for time, a traffic jam was never going to do anyone any good. Schedules go for a toss, people have lesser time to accomplish more, and the workforce’s productivity reduces. And preventing that from happening is the greatest challenge for public transportation in India.
Overworked Public Transport Vehicles
An increasing population demands more out of its transport system. It expects the services to match the population growth rate and that obviously is too great a mountain for the system to scale. The immediate outcome of that is an overworked public transport system.
The process of adding new vehicles to the existing fleet is long and tiresome as it has to meet the pre-existing rules and protocols. In the meantime, the existing fleet is overworked and each bus, train and cab is stretched to function beyond its capabilities. This affects their efficiency both in the long and short run and reduces their expected life.

This particular problem is a by-product of the other 2 discussed previously. An increase in the number of vehicles on the road, each performing below its expected level of efficiency, is bound to trigger the menace that pollution has become.
This issue is more prevalent in urban areas where nature isn’t quite given the respect it commands and the quest to maximise urban mobility is given prime importance. Nature’s forces that balance out the effects of pollution do not work at their optimal best at urban centres and that only accentuates the problem further.
Is there a solution?
Yes there is! There never is a problem that doesn’t have a solution and this is no different. The need of the hour is to create smart cities and step towards that direction is taken through the Smart Cities Mission. A smart city could be thought of as a city where the infrastructure is developed in accordance with what the people need. In a smart city, existing transport systems are constantly worked upon to increase their efficiency while granting the environment its due importance.
But such a solution could only be attained by combined and sustained efforts of the general public and the government, and smart planning. Yes it is easier said than done but is a mission that is not impossible by any stretch of imagination!
