What is Aadhaar card and where is it mandatory?

The Aadhaar program was launched in the year 2009 with a primary goal to provide universal identity to every Indian resident. When Aadhaar got launched it faced a lot of criticism from the masses and the significance of Aadhaar was also not clear. Yet, now Aadhaar alone is the only document which is of utmost importance to every Indian Citizen. Aadhaar was launched to help citizens to avail various government and various government subsidies, to provide a unique identity to the citizens of India and usage as a nationally accepted identity and address proof. Besides, it is also of great help to curb illegal immigration. However, many amongst are still not aware of the various purposes it is used for. Read on to know more about Aadhaar.

What is Aadhaar card (number)?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued to the Indian Citizens by the central government. Aadhaar card is governed and issued by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). It is designed to record and verify every resident Indian citizen’s details including biometric and demographic data.

Day to Day uses of Aadhaar

Aadhaar can be used as a single identification document with the telecom companies, financial institutions etc. and banks can use it as KYC (know your customer) document and as a verification mode. This is all possible as Aadhaar was not made to replace existing identification documents like passport, driving license, PAN card etc.

Where is Aadhaar Mandatory?

With orders from the Supreme Court, the Government cannot be stopped from using Aadhaar for its non-welfare schemes like the filing of taxes, an opening of bank accounts, verification, and user credentials and also the verification of new and existing mobile number. Besides, it has allowed the use of Aadhaar in some of its schemes, but not permitted to be used as a mandatory requirement.

The Government has made the list of following announcements made recently.

Note: Here, both welfare and non-welfare schemes will feature in this list.

1)      Workers who work with Beedi, Iron Ore and limestone companies need Aadhaar for availing the housing subsidy.

2)      Aadhaar is mandatory for farmers who are interested in taking crop benefit and for the ones who are eligible for subsidized food grains/cash subsidy for the same.

3)      Aadhaar is mandatory for people who wish to avail welfare schemes under the Integrated Department of Horticulture, Janani Suraksha Yojana and National the Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme.

4)      To avail training under Integrated Child Development, Services of the Ministry of Women and Child Development it is mandatory to have Aadhaar.

5)      It is mandatory for financial support under the National Mission for Empowerment of Women, for adolescent women students who want to avail Central scholarship and financial support given under National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship.

6)      Aadhaar is also mandatory for the supplementary nutrition program.

7)      Aadhaar is mandatory for you to get benefited under the Grih Kalyan Kendra scheme.

8)      It is made compulsory for e-panchayat training benefits and students who wish to avail central scholarships at the college level.

9)      You may require Aadhaar for schemes like Soil Health management and Soil Health Care.

10)  Aadhaar is necessary for supplementary meals at creches require Aadhaar.

11)   Mid-day meals require Aadhaar. Also, the cooks-cum helpers who earn out of this scheme must also have an Aahaar card.

12)  Aadhaar is also mandatory for children who are disabled and aged between 6-14 years so that they are eligible under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

13)   Aadhaar is compulsory to book your tickets with the Indian Railways on the IRCTC website.

14)   If you want to benefit under National Health Mission by trained female community health activist ASHA or Accredited Social Health Activist Aadhaar is a mandatory document.

15)  The victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy need Aadhaar to avail compensation from the government.

16)  As per Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for women below poverty line, require Aadhaar card status to avail benefits.

17)   To file income tax and to apply for PAN, Aadhaar is necessary.
