What Is Difference Between Ball Valve And Butterfly Valve

Ball Valves

A ball with a hole which is running through it called a ball valve. While turning the valve’s positions, the hole to either fully block or partially block or complete the flow line through the valve.

When the valve is fully closed there will not be any leak. The ball valve will turn on the supply side regardless of its pressure. If the hole through the valve is larger than the inner diameter of the supply pipe, then the ball valve will offer no restrictions or pressure drop when fully opened.

In high pressure liquid or gas lines, the ball valves are used. Usually 6 inches ball valve is used.

The ball valve is very costly to make, allowing unrestricted flow when opened fully and usually rates for higher pressures.

Butterfly Valves

A disk which is mounted on a rotating shaft is called a butterfly valve. The disk blocks the line completely when fully closed. When fully opened, the disk comes to a right angle position to the liquid or gas flow.

Butterfly valves are inexpensive to maintain and build. It is used commonly in large volume water systems such as Municipal water works. This valve can also be used for dirty liquid applications such as controlling river water or sewage.

When opening fully, the butterfly valve disk remains in the valve flow line, so there will be a pressure drop across the valve is expected. If the pressure difference is more across the butterfly valve, then it may be difficult to open the valve. A bypass valve is required in some applications to bring down the pressure difference. Butterfly Valve Manufactures serve the valves as bulk to the ordered customers as well as to retailers.

Difference between ball valve and butterfly valve:

Butterfly valves are inexpensive when compare to other valves and it is lighter in weight. As ball valves butterfly valves do not seal completely whereas ball valves have a reliable seal. The ball valve provides superior cut-off characteristics and has no trouble in turning / needing a pressure balancing scheme in higher pressure applications.

The biggest difference between ball and butterfly valve is a disc for butterfly valve, a ball for ball valve as this part opens and closes. Both the ball and disc rotate around its own axis. Butterfly valve can adjust the flow through the opening space whereas ball valve cannot be easily adjusted.

The butterfly valve is easy to open and close fast, low cost, simple structure whereas there is a limited pressure range and sealing tightness. The ball valve is similar as gate valve. However, due to the limited volume and opening & closing force it is tough to make a large diameter.

Ball valves seals are more effective than butterfly valves. That’s why ball valve is generally used in the project involved with the gas flow. Butterfly valve is commonly used in the project to control river flow or stream water flow.

Ball valves can be operated manually, automatically whereas butterfly valves can be operated manually.
