Medical marijuana

Marijuana is often consumed before going to sleep, whether by habit or medical necessity. Since it not only helps to overcome insomnia and strengthen sleep, it also has several beneficial effects for healthy sleep.

Scientists explain this effect of marijuana on a dream that cannabinoids in hemp are very similar in structure and action to some substances produced by the human brain.

These substances, which are part of the endocannabinoid system of the body, are able to influence many processes occurring in the brain, including the adjustment of the state of sleep.

As shown by numerous studies that studied the influence of marijuana on sleep, it has several pronounced effects, namely:

Easier to fall asleep:

The active component of marijuana - THC helps to greatly facilitate sleep as in healthy people, and in those who suffer from various forms of sleep disorders and insomnia.

Following a small study in 1973, THC helped 9 volunteers suffering from insomnia to fall asleep within an hour after using cannabis. The same study notes that an extremely high dose of THC can cause the opposite effect. The result of this work was successfully repeated by a similar study in 2013.

Strong and long sleep:

Adoption before bedtime of THC or CCD increases its length. As one study showed, increasing the dose of THC affects the increase in the duration of sleep and makes it stronger.

True, at high doses of THC, some participants in this study felt, after waking up, some distraction and a headache, which they described as a kind of hangover. Such feelings were not observed in participants who used low and medium doses of THC.

Increased phase of deep sleep:

Some interesting observations refer to the influence of marijuana on the very cycle of sleep. It turned out that THC increases the duration of the deep sleep stage, which is responsible for the restoration of body forces and for the processing and formation of memories. It is the insufficient duration of this stage that is the main cause of most sleep disorders. Lack of deep sleep can lead to increased fatigue, irritability and increased blood pressure.

Decrease in the phase of short sleep:

The use of cannabis before bedtime also affects the stage of a short sleep. Many people who use cannabis before going to sleep, report the absence of dreams, which manifest themselves in the stage of a short sleep.

This effect can be attributed to the negative effect of marijuana on sleep, but scientists have not yet determined what function the stage of short sleep performs for the body.

It is also worth noting that during a break from frequent smoking cannabis, the stage of short sleep increases dramatically. This effect, the so-called “REM wave”, contributes to the growth of dreams and increased anxiety in a dream. Within a couple of days, this effect passes, and the phase of a short sleep comes back to normal.

Improve breathing in sleep:

Marijuana can greatly help people with sleep apnea. This condition is characterized by intermittent breathing during sleep and is associated with some serious diseases, such as various heart diseases or diabetes. Unfortunately, most people living with this disease do not receive medical care. At the moment, the only medicine used in medicine for the treatment of this disease is a cumbersome CIPAP mask.

But doctors see marijuana as a more effective form of apnea therapy. Preliminary results have already shown the success of hemp treatment. If clinical trials show a good result, people living with this disease will be able to say goodbye to CIPAP masks and calmly go to bed, taking just a few THC tablets.
