Gender Pay-Rights ? Women?s rights in the workplace

The human population consists of roughly an equal proportion of men and women, so why in today’s society are we seeing such as disparity when it comes to equal pay? Gender pay inequality in the workplace is one of the most talked about topics and has made headline news frequently over the past few years. More companies have been pressured to disclose any disparity of pay between male and female counterparts, causing concern that in some cases women can feel that this is a man's world, where they are continually being paid less to do the same job as their male counterparts.

Statistics have highlighted that the pay gap has improved over the last ten years however, it is still apparent that women are earning less than men, irrespective of the criteria of the qualifications. Such discrimination has forced millions of women globally, to come out in protest in an effort to get their basic rights!

Under-representation in the workforce is also a problem for some women, in particular traditionally male dominated industries. For example, less than 1% of the UK’s on site workforce in construction are women. Below is a list of some of the top under-represented workforces globally right now.

  1. Plumbing

  2. Construction engineers

  3. Bricklayers

  4. Roofers

  5. Security and fire alarms installers

  6. Carpenters

And the list continues. There has been a recent push to encourage more women into joining these typically male dominated occupations, however some women are likely to be put off if wage gaps are also still an issue. After all, why pursue a difficult career when you are likely to be paid less than your male counterpart? There is just no incentive.

If the gap in the pay scales are narrowed down and the fields become less male dominated, the world might be a happier place. That’s exactly how Michelle Hands feels and after pursuing a successful career in construction, she started “This is a Man’s World”, an inspiring website that through its products and inspirational stories is helping to encourage women to pursue careers that are in predominately male dominated fields, and fight for an equal place in the workforce!

With a motto, “she who dares, wins”, it perfectly describes a woman, who has for the past 12 years been stuck in a man’s world of construction. Her aim is to build a community of women who share the same way of thinking, and share her positive messages through some of the best feminist t shirts and other products that incorporate the values of the free spirit and, “do what you wish to do” attitude, on the internet right now.
