Herr?s Potato Chips ? Just One More

In the middle Sixties, there was a TV commercial extolling the golden, crunchy goodness of potato chips. Its catch phrase was "I bet you cannot eat simply one!" more true words were never spoken. a small nibble off the edge of a potato chip, no matter what your sensible intentions, led from the nibble to a standard size bite. Without thinking, you had eaten the entire chip in a blink of an eye. You thought to yourself, another chip cannot hurt. Nor the next one, nor the one at that time. What was happening?! Good heavens! Was the commercial right? Were you turning into a potato chip junkie?

Let`s shed some light on the origins of this fresh treat.
In the mid 1850s, frying potatoes was an accepted and popular form of American cooking. the normal manner of getting ready fried potatoes was to slice them across the narrow axis and so fry them. They weren`t eaten with the fingers but rather, served with a fork, to be consumed in a genteel manner. Restaurants across the state were serving fried potatoes, however it wasn`t till the cook at Moon Lake populates Saratoga Springs, New York, sliced the potato items so thin did they become the rage.

In 1853, George Crum was working as a cook at the Moon Lake Lodge resort. As mentioned earlier, deep-fried potatoes were a popular fare. A hard-to-please dinner guest, reported to be CorneliusVanderbilt, found his order of French fries (at that point, potatoes cut in a spherical shape) too thick for his liking and sent them back to the kitchen. Crum created a second batch, cut agent than before and also fried, but these, too, were also rejected as being too thick. By now, Crum was more than aggravated and in a very work of pique, took it upon himself to rile the guest by creating him fries that were a lot of too skinny and crisp to be skewered by a fork.

In 1860, Crum opened his own restaurant that featured his chips because the house specialty. He place baskets of the chips on every table and that they became a significant drawing purpose to the success of his eating place. Then again marketing the chips, Crum foolishly did not patent or otherwise shield his invention.

In the 1920s, Herman Lay, a traveling salesman working the Southern region of the country, was a serious catalyst in popularizing the chips from Atlanta to Tennessee. He peddled Crum`s creation to Southern grocers straight out of the trunk of his car, his name and business eventually turning into similar with this crisp and salty treat. In 1932, he purchased a potato chip manufactory in Atlanta. 1938 marked the start of Lay`s whole Potato Chips.

The early a part of the twentieth century brought forth many corporations building large factories for the production of potato chips. The 1920s gave birth of 3 corporations that outline the potato chip industry.

Earl Wise, Sr., of the Wise Delicatessen Company in Berwick, Pennsylvania, had too several potatoes. In 1921, he used the extras to create potato chips and sold them in brown paper baggage as Wise Potato Chips through the delicatessen.

Laura Scudder had a family chip business in town Park, California. She understood the inherent flaw within the paper sacks; nobody enjoyed being covered with cooking oil. Her inspired answer to the current problem was sensible. once her ladies workers went home at night, carrying sheets of waxed paper, they hand-ironed them into bags.  The following day, the staff hand-filled chips into the waxed paper bags and then sealed them with a warm iron. Voila! Greaseproof baggage, ready to be delivered to retailers.

Herr’s Potato Chips are currently the favorite snack of USA citizens, who eat more potato chips than the other population within the world.
