Christian Baldini: Journey from Argentine to America

Posted by Christian Baldini on August 13th, 2018

When it comes to the most accomplished composers and conductors of today, Christian Baldini is one of the names that never fail to stand out. The Argentine, Italian, and American orchestra and opera conductor and composer was born on August 25, 1978 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and he has been living in the United States since 2003. Four continents have been fortunate to have experienced his compositions and performances as his works continue to be commissioned and performed by many different ensembles and orchestras around the world, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Munich Radio Orchestra, New York New Music Ensemble, Orchestre National de Lorraine, and Southbank Sinfonia.

Christian Baldini served as the assistant conductor with London’s BBC Symphony Orchestra and as the cover conductor for the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas. In 2015, he conducted a work by Pulitzer Prize Winner John Luther Adams when it was performed for the first time with the San Francisco Symphony, under the invitation of Michael Tilson Thomas. Baldini’s experience as a conductor also encompasses opera credits for the English National Opera in London, the Aldeburgh Festival (which was founded by Benjamin Britten) and return engagements for the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires and as Music Director of the Mondavi Center’s Rising Stars of Opera, in collaboration with the San Francisco Opera. The latter features young operatic talents from the San Francisco Opera Aders Fellows Program and the winners of international competitions, such as David Lomelí, Pene Pati, Brian Jagde, Leah Crocetto, Sean Pannikar, and Nadine Sierra.

One of his most notable performances is his CD, ‘Mozart Arias and Overtures’ in which he conducted the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with soprano Elizabeth Watts. This CD was distinguished as the ‘Recording of the Month’ by the BBC Music Magazine and MusicWeb International. Classic FM acknowledged it as ‘CD of the Week’, and it earned critical acclaim with four- and five-star reviews on Opera News, The Guardian, Sinfini, and Gramophone.

The international press has described Christian Baldini as a conductor with “a keen ear for detail” (The Scotsman). Moreover, he is perceived as someone who is capable of “leaving sighs throughout the hall and rows of the orchestra” (Folha de Sao Paulo). Moira de Swardt said of him that “Passion and dedication intersect for a fabulous orchestral concert,” when he made his conducting debut in South Africa.
