These are the close lid storage container which doesn't let moisture to get in and ruin the chemical. For instance, cobalt chloride paper is one of the chemicals that is most prone to water or humidity. So, as a whole, Desiccator is used for the chemicals that are hydrophilic or that are most prone to water and humidity in the air.

Using a Desiccator

The Desiccator is used for maintaining the dry salt or the chemical in a dry atmosphere. This isn’t used for a wet chemical or in simple words you cannot use a wet chemical to dry it up in the Desiccator. Here are the guidelines that you need to follow to use the Desiccator efficiently.

Guidelines:

  1. Use one hand to hold the container and the other hand to slide the lid horizontally. Keep sliding in the direction it has to, and it will open up in a few slides. Grab the container with ease as it may break if you fail to hold it in your hands.
  2. To close the container, place the lid on the top part and it can help you to close up the Desiccator. All you need to do is to rotate the lid in such a way that closes up quickly.
  3. Never make a mistake to take the lid off with a sudden lift. This vertical lift can cause you a lot of things, and one can end up breaking up the lid if lost the grip on the container.
  4. Sometimes the grease can help your lid to become more accessible to move. With much time and usage of the Desiccator, the lid keeps on getting hard to move. Try to grease it according to your needs, and you can even use up Vaseline for the greasing. It will make the lid to move just like it does at the first use.
  5. If your desiccant feels a little wet and even you see one drop in it, then you should replace the desiccant in your Desiccator. This can be helpful for you as once it is wet, then you cannot place anything into the desiccant and your Desiccator is of no use with water in it.
  6. Whenever you are replacing the desiccant in your Desiccator Box, then use the necessary lab goggles and masks and all other security measures. Make sure that your desiccant is not coating the Desiccators’ plate and sides.

These things can help you to use the Desiccator to the fullest and try to keep all these in mind. If you have any problem with the usage, then you can follow up with this guide to get the necessary information.
