Ways to Set Up Two-step Authentication on Microsoft Account

Posted by Aida01 on September 10th, 2018

It has been said a million times that you should use two-factor authentication everywhere possible. It is one of the most security measures that provide you a lot more peace of mind.

Usually, Microsoft protects its apps with “Two-step verification” not with the “Two-factor verification.”  Alex Simons, vice president for Microsoft’s identity division, describes that from a security standpoint, they will consider the experience of the watch as two-step verification. The first factor is the possession of the watch; the second factor is the PIN that only users know. When they put their watch on the wrist in the morning, they will need to unlock it. As long as they didn’t remove it from their wrist, it stays within the range of their phone, and it will remain unlocked itself, they need not to provide your PIN again.

If you are using Microsoft apps, you entirely should set up the two-step authentication on your Microsoft account. You can either use Microsoft’s official app or your favorite authentication app.

Where to set up the two-step authentication

What comes first is where to set it up; you need to find out where it should be set up. There’s a simple walkthrough for the process on Microsoft’s website but it’s buried a couple of pages thick. You can find it by:

  • Signing in to your Microsoft account and go to the “Security basics” page.
  • Selecting “more security options” page at the bottom of the page.
  • On the “Additional Security Options” page, select the “set up Two-step verification.”
  • Synchronize Microsoft’s authenticator app

Microsoft defaults to its own authenticator too that is Ways to Set Up Two-step Authentication on Microsoft Account

  • 1st step– From the “Set up Two-factor Authentication’ page, select “Next,” and you will be induced to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • 2nd step– If you are using Microsoft Authenticator, simply download the app and log in to your account. You will require to type in a code sent to your phone number or email.
  • 3rd step– Click “next” on the two-factor authentication set up page, and you are all set to go.

Using a different authentication app:

  • Step1: Click “set up a different Authentication app.” Microsoft will generate a QR code; you may use your authenticator app to read it.
  • Step 2: your authenticator app will give you a code, generally a pair of 3or 4 digit number. Type it into the text below in the QR code.

Once you set up the 2 step authentication, you quickly can turn it on and off by returning to the “Additional Security Options” page. After that, select the “Turn off Two-Step Verification.”

A two-step verification process now will protect your account.
