How to Know What Questions to Ask when Applying for Government Jobs

There are many questions that applicants should be aware of. If you have additional questions, you as an applicant have the right to contact the human resources representative and ask those questions. Remember, you as a taxpayer are paying the salaries of those employees in the government and you have a right to call.

What announcements can I apply to?

It can get kind of confusing on what an applicant can and can't become eligible for. Merit Promotion Announcements are open to current, previsions federal employees, disabled persons, veterans, disabled vets, Peace Corps, or any other special hiring authorities that may be disclosed in the announcements. Delegated examining announcements are open to anyone to become eligible for. I encourage all applicants to apply for any job announcement they wish to because hiring authorities differ from announcement to announcement. I hope this helps.

How long will it take to see if I got the job?

It all depends on the announcement and how long it is open for. At least a minimum, 90 days from the closing of the announcement.

How do they determine who gets the jobs?

With Merit promotion announcements, the is a base score. When you answer the announcement questions, the answers are normally scored. In most agencies, the minimum score to receive consideration is 70 score or above. All others are not considered unless the applicant has held that position before. Eligibility and qualifications are vitally important.
