The first belt that a participant to a Six Sigma training and certification program receives is the white belt. A white belt holder works part-time in Six Sigma projects and helps with data collection and local problem solving. However, to advance through the Six Sigma hierarchy, one has to undergo further training and get their Six Sigma yellow belt certification and Six Sigma green belt certification. This is when they can work full-time on projects and even lead the projects.

A Six Sigma green belt is someone who has completed their yellow belt certification but is waiting to get their black belt. Someone with experience of handling projects as a green belt can enroll for the black belt certification after working on projects and delivering what they are supposed to deliver.Once the Six Sigma green belt certification is awarded to an individual, they can work as team members with a black belt on complex projects or lead a team working on simpler projects.
Getting the yellow or the green belt doesn’t mean that someone has to leave their job and undertake training.
