There is an old saying which says ‘A stitch in a time saves nine’. The nation at the present time is going through various changes and hazards out of which the health hazard being the most prominent. The deadly disease of Scoliosis is one such area which requires critical attention at this point in time. Scoliosis is a condition in which the spinal cord has a curvature towards the side. The curve can be towards left or towards the right but if left untreated can cause severe problems in life.

If we are to see the facts and the figures a significant chunk of the American population that is approximately 13 million people are diagnosed with these conditions. In total 4.3% of the American population suffer from Scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a condition where it has been so far considered that surgery is the only cure which is not at all true. To treat scoliosis people switch to surgeries not knowing that there are a lot of Scoliosis surgery side effects. One example which could substantiate this is the consequences of the Harrington rod implantation surgeries which cost about 0,000 per operation.

This figure raises important concerns as about 8,000 people who undergo the scoliosis correction surgery in their youth are later legally defined as permanent handicapped. The Harrington rods either break, bend or loosen up requiring a further removal surgery leaving the imprints of rust on them.

To tackle this issue, many people from the medical fraternity have turned up suggesting the alternative means in treating scoliosis to avoid the scoliosis surgery side effects. An article written by Morningstar et al wrote about the new possibilities for the treatment for scoliosis which emphasized on alternative therapies using a combination of manipulative and rehabilitative therapy.

In the study by Morningstar et al., it was found that with the use of specific spinal adjustments, exercise therapy and vibratory stimulation the patients experienced an average reduction of about 62% in their Cobb Angle. When subsequent studies were carried out, the importance of correction of the cervical spine with follow up X- rays which are performed after 3 months is an option.

Other techniques are mentioned below-

Correcting balance- Through regular exercise and specialized procedures, correction of balance of the specific spinal adjustments paired with proprioceptive retraining exercises.

Reducing Forward head posture- This would involve placing spinal weights on head or hips which will stimulate the weak muscles. Whole body vibration therapy has also been proved very useful.

Traction- It involves administering a gentle force or pulling which is less readily resisted by the body which can be performed both at clinic or home.

There are many websites or centers which offer a range of alternative methods or therapies for scoliosis over surgery. To take a wise decision, for something as sensitive as scoliosis consult various websites of correction centers.
