North America Emerged As A Regional leader In The Organ On Chip Market,Says TBRC

Posted by praneeth on October 10th, 2018

Scientific advances in cell biology, microfabrication and microfluidics have led to the development of Organ-on-Chips (OOCs). OOCs are microfluidic 3D cell culture devices that closely mimic the key physiological functions of body organs. These chips are not designed to biomimic an entire organ, but simulate the physiology of a single functional unit of an organ system.

TBRC’s report covers the various segments in the market, such as lung on a chip, heart on a chip, the microarray market, lab-on-a-chip market, etc.

The Biochip Market

The process of drug discovery and development begins with the identification of structure and function of molecular or cellular targets that participate in the pathophysiology of disease. In the past, a small number of molecules with therapeutic potential were discovered serendipitously; however, recent advances in genetics and proteomics research have allowed the development of a vast number of compounds for various diseases. The availability of high-throughput techniques has facilitated rapid screening of these molecules to test for biological activity using in-vitro assays.

North America accounted for about 60% of the global market for organ on a chip in 2017. The USA accounts for the dominant share of the North American market. This is mainly due to the presence of several potential end-users, including major pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, and major research organizations.

The provision of high-scale funding by several US government organizations including National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) also supports research in the market in the USA.

North America will continue to account for the largest share of the global OOC market during the forecast period. North America is the headquarters for many pharmaceutical companies and research organizations. The presence of multiple end-users increases the scope for sales collaborations thus increasing the prospects of market growth. For instance, out of the three disclosed companies which have signed collaborations with CN Bio since the beginning of 2015, two are US-based companies (Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc.) Another example of a major collaboration is between J&J and Emulate Bio signed in June 2015.

Organs on chips manufacturing companies included in the report are CN Bio Innovations, Emulate, TissUse, Mimetas, Hurel, Nortis, InSphero and Tara Biosystems.
