Antigone

The play starts with two sons who are fighting for kingship and both men die in the battle. The successor decided that one of the brothers is to be buried and the other left on the battlefield. However, Antigone, his sister decided to bury him despite the successor's command. She is caught burying his brother, and she is condemned to death. A major theme in the movie is civil disobedience evident when the sister decides to bury her brother; thus, disobeying the law. She felt it was bad law since her brother deserved his final rights. The successor also disobeyed the law since in Greek custom; the city has the responsibility of burying its citizens. The plays tend to have an influence on the Greek society as it helps to show the importance of obeying the law instead of just following your conscience.

The movie version that we watched was appealing to me because it captures a person’s emotions. The display of the incidents and also the characters was so real that it was easy to relate to what was happening. The movie helped create sympathy following the incidents that occurred in Antigone’s life.

One current event that can compare to what Antigone was experiencing is with regards to the gay rights aspect. Some of the governments have made it lawful to support gays; however, there are some religions that are completely against gay. As a result of these differences, it has resulted in the conflict between what is law and the aspect of religion. The conflict of whether to follow the law or the religion is just the same as what Antigone was experiencing in the movie.
