They are one of the oldest Best Acting School Los Angeles and they have a great reputation for cranking out talented actors and actresses. What are the origins? Douglas Bank and Jay Manford bought the Bliss-Hyden Theater in 1954 and re-named it the Beverly Hills Playhouse. They owned the theater until 1959. Who runs the schools now? Famed instructor, Milton Katselas bought the place in 1978. He has been running the school for more than 30 years and has trained many of the top actors that you know today at one time or another. Students include George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, and Tom Selleck, just to name a few. That's cool. Should I go there because they did? No. Don't always trust everything you read on an acting schools website. Certainly these people studied there but for how long, that is another story. It is a very unique place in that is teaches its students not just about acting technique, but also about life in general and how to deal with the stress a disappointment of the entertainment business. You could do a lot worse than the Beverly Hills Playhouse. It is one of the most respected acting colleges in Los Angeles. No, it is not an actual college, but as far as acting goes, you might learn more here than you would at a traditional 4 year university program. You don't have to take any core classes like math or science at a place like this. Some people might argue that getting a well-rounded education will help them with their acting craft. That is for each individual to decide. There are a lot of options when it comes to attending acting colleges. Some are traditional and some of them you have to think outside the box. Whichever one you choose, take it seriously. It is a serious and competitive business. Regardless of what acting colleges you choose, you will have to earn your way in Hollywood if you want to stay. What is the difference between acting colleges and acting schools? If you are looking to get into the acting and entertainment biz you have probably come across both terms, but what do they mean? To simplify it, acting colleges typically tend to be accredited universities or traditional colleges where as acting schools with typically be specific to just learning acting or film studies. For example, UCLA or USC would most likely be considered acting colleges. They are both standard universities where one can not only take film and acting course, but standard math, science, and English courses as well. In fact, you will be expected to take these classes if you go to one of these colleges in addition to your drama classes. An example of an acting school would be something like the New York Film Academy. This is an accredited college that will give you diploma at the completion of one of their extensive programs, but they also offer shorter, intensive workshops and classes. You will not be taking biology 101 or geometry at an acting school like this as you might at acting colleges. Those are the basic differences between acting colleges and acting schools. What you learn at these places is going to be pretty much the same basic concepts. What you learn at acting colleges is going to tend to be broader and cover more disciplines in the performing arts genre. What you learn in acting schools is going to probably be a little bit more targeted and intensive in a certain area. Which one should you choose when considering acting colleges or acting schools? It really depends on personal preference, I hate to say. If you want to pay a little less money or just take more specific courses in a certain area of the performing arts, an acting school might be right for you. If you want to go for the colleges experience and get a well-round education in the arts field then acting colleges might be something that you would consider. Like it? Share it!More by this author |
