• Always try and get rid of cards with higher points. This is to ensure that if an opponent makes a show before you do, your deadwood points are reduced.
• Always look out for and gather smart cards. These are cards that can be easily melded into a run. For example, 7 of any suit can be put together with 5 & 6 of the same suit and can also work with 8 & 9 of the same suit.
• Jokers are important in the game of rummy and you need to focus on making the best use of jokers in your game. Always use the joker card to complete a run or set of higher points value. One more thing is to try and not use joker in a natural run.
• Waiting endlessly for a particular card to meld a run is not a wise thing to do. You need to constantly look at your cards and keep reevaluating them to make changes.
• Do not retain cards for too long. The smart thing to do is keep on discarding cards that are not being used as soon as possible especially if their points value is high.
