Genitalia constituents

Discussion Question: is sex about how you present yourself or about your genitalia constituents?

The last paragraph of “what is your understanding of the gender spectrum” quotes Liebman’s statement that ‘my genitalia has nothing to do with the gender identity’ The key points are presented in the same paragraph that the issue of gender is about the way one understands their personal cocktail of masculinity or femininity. The other key point that the author points to that supports his argument is that in-between ‘male’ and ‘female’ there exists many places a person can occupy and those places are not consistent but change day-to-day. In the second paragraph of the subtitle “The language barrier,” the author says that someone that does not present oneself as either male of the female has to be given something else other tan male or female in which they can fit.

The answer that can be given from the current reading to the question presented above is that gender is not about the genital of a person. The author has already mentioned some points that do support his argument about the issue of gender and sex. However, the issue is not even an issue of discussion because the points given to support the claim are not sufficient. It has been known that gender is about male and female and if you just choose any book, you will always get it being referred like so. Even the constituents of genes for male and female are very different whereby the male has the X and Y chromosomes while a female has XX chromosomes. The way one presents himself/herself does not qualify them to change their gender. The way one cannot change the hormonal or gene composition is the same way one cannot change his gender identity by behavior.

Key points

  1. Gender: the Webster dictionary, Oxford University Press dictionary, and the Cambridge Dictionary define gender as a state of being male or female. They also comment that it is unchangeable.
  2. The way you behave can tell whether you are male or female according to the Rebbecca Hiscott from ATTN, Inc. According to them, it is important that one behaves the same way he/she ought in light of their gender composition based on genitalia. The author says that it will more advantageous if one behaves in a way that supports their gender composition of being male or female. Therefore, be careful how you behave!
